I just went on a vacation to the Almafi Coast in Italy and so, of course, beforehand I was thinking of sunshine, Italian beaches, and stylish beach wear!
I was also thinking about my fair skin—it was pretty clear I would need a hat!
I have an old floppy beach hat in the back of my closet that I secretly hate, but keep around because it packs well and I never worry about losing it.
It’s basic, with a beaded band that makes it look more 2001 than 2018, so I thought I would transform it into something chic.
I started transforming it the way I transform all of my DIY projects—with spray paint…
I thought metallic might be neutral, yet hip, and the bronze deepened the natural straw tone.
Using a hot glue gun, I added a braided leather strap...
Then I added a brown ribbon with a gold chevron pattern and a sea horse patch as a fun beach accent.
It took no time and looked okay.
However when it came time to pack, the hat didn't make the cut, which tells me I failed this challenge.
I picked up a straw hat on the beach for 8 euros and wore it for the week.
I think if I had it to do over, I would bedazzle a pair of my cheap sunglasses or flip flops.
Sorry to disappoint this week. It was a good reminder that the time for craft projects is not right before a big trip.
